My field of research is to investigate strongly correlated electron systems using neutron scattering and muon spin resonance techniques. The field of strongly correlated electron systems is an active area in condensed matter physics research recently and in spite of a huge amount of experimental and theoretical work, the magnetic properties of solids are by no means completely understood. My research is focused on the materials which are important to understand the fundamental physics as well as the development of new future thermoelectric device technology.  I am currently working on heavy fermion systems, new FeAs-based high temperature superconductors (HTSC), transition mental oxides, thermoelectric materials, low dimensional magnetism and magnetic-nanoparticles. The main focus on heavy fermion and FeAs-based-SC/HTSC is to understand commonality between these different systems, which may lead to a common origin of superconductivity, and to investigate the role of quantum fluctuations on the origin of unconventional superconductivity and break down of standard Fermi-liquid theory in these materials. Many heavy fermion systems exhibit a huge value of thermoelectric power, which is important for thermoelectric device. On transition metal oxides systems the main focus is to probe low dimensional magnetic fluctuations using inelastic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation and directly to test various theoretical models. Currently I am working on Kondo insulators, FeAs-based double layered superconductors and spin-chain and spin ladder systems.

Current Scientific Projects:

1. Spin gap, Kondo insulator, non-Fermi-liquid behaviour and quantum criticality in CeT2Al10

Very recently CeT2Al10 (T=Ru, Os and Fe) compounds have generated considerable interest due to spin gap formation, metal-insulator transition and Kondo insulator behaviour. Dr Adroja's group has made a considerable progress in investing these materials in polycrystalline as well as in single crystalline form. The group from ISIS, Prof. Takabatake' s group from Hiroshima University, Prof. Strydom's group from Johannesburg University, Dr C. Ritter (ILL),  Profs. Boothroyd (Oxford) and McEwen (UCL) are involved in this project.

2.  Quantum Spin-liquid ground state in YbMgGaO4

Very recently the observation of a quantum spin-liquid ground state in strongly correlated electron systems has attracted considerable interest both in theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics. It is generally believe that geometrical frustration is playing an important role in stabilizing QSL ground.  We are investigating QSL ground state in YbMgGaO4 using musr and neutron scattering in collaboration with Prof. Q.  Zhang and Dr Y. Li, Renmin University of China.

3. Spin dimer formation and Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) in YbAl3C3

We are currently investigating the possibility of BEC in YbAl3C3 using high field neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements. We have found a clear sign of field induced long range magnetic ordering in YbAl3C3 at critical field of 6T at 50mK. Inelastic studies reveal two low energy modes, which can be explained model based on triplon bound state. We are collaborating this project with an experimental group of Prof. M. Kosaka from Saitama University, Japan and theory group of Prof. Qimiao Si, Rice University, USA.

4.  Quantum criticality and Non-Fermi-liquid behaviour

The strange electronic state of a class of materials which violates the predictions of conventional Landau Fermi-liquid theory of metals remains enigmatic. Proximity to a quantum critical point is a possible origin of this non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behaviour, which is usually accomplished by tuning the ground state with non-thermal control parameters such as chemical composition, magnetic field and pressure. We are investigating the spin dynamics study of a stoichiometric NFL system CeRhBi, using low-energy inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and muon spin relaxation (µSR) measurements. Our study clearly shows that it is very important to investigate stoichiometric compound to make direct comparison with theoretical models. We are also planning further study on CePtSi in collaboration with Prof. Strydom from JU, South Africa. Further experiments on NFL behaviour in frustrated systems based on quasi-Kagome lattice, such as CeRh1-xPdxSn,  as well as valence induced quantum criticality, in YbCu5-xAlx,  are planned.

 5. New transition metals and rare earths based superconductors:

Recently we have started investigating new superconductors A2Cr2As2  (A=K, Cs and Rb) (in collaboration with Prof. Zhao, Furan University, China), Sr0.5R0.5FBiS2 with R=La-Nd (in collaboration with Dr Awana, NPL, New Delhi, India) and R5Rh6Sn18 R=Y, Sc and Y (in collaboration with Prof. Akimitsu, Aoyama-Gakuin University, Japan) using neutron scattering and muon spin rotation (µSR). We have published 5 papers on these projects in high profile journals. Further, investigations on these systems are planned to fully understand the nature of superconducting order parameters.

Very recently I have stared new collaboration with Prof. G. Cao, ZJU, and Hangzhou, who has discovered 18 new superconductors. We have investigated superconducting properties of Ca2AFe4As4F (A=K, Rb and Cs) compounds using µSR at ISIS facility. We will also investigate new rare earth based superconductors of this family using µSR and neutron measurements. I am also collaborating with Dr H. Luo, IOP Beijing, on neutron scattering and musr investigations on ThFeAsN superconductor and a paper has been published in Phys. Rev. B.

6. Low dimension and frustrated magnetism in transition metal oxides

We are currently investigating various transition metal oxide systems, such as Sr3TMO6 and Ca3TMO6  (T and M transition metals and metalloids),  to understand the role of low dimension magnetism due to strong spin-orbital interactions in collaboration with ISIS, PSI, ILL, Warwick and TIFR Mumbai groups.  We have used neutron and muon techqniues to investigate anisotropic exchanges as well as nature of two phase transitions in some of these compounds.

Recently the double perovskites materials with general formula A2BB'O6  have attracted considerable attention due to their interesting physical properties as well as their potential application in spintronics device and energy storage materials. These materials are also ideal to investigate geometrical frustration due to their crystal structure in which the magnetic atoms occupy face entered lattice (FCC), which is frustrated. We are currently investigating Sr2RRuO6, Ba2RRuO6 (R=Rare earths) and La2NaTO6 (T=Ru and Os) using inelastic neutron scattering and µSR measurements. We are also working on quasi-1D systems, Li3RuO4 and Honeycomb lattice, Li2RuO3 in collaboration with ISIS, Oxford, Seoul, and North Carolina groups.

7. CEF-Phonon coupling, superconductivity and magnetism in non-centrosymmetry compounds

Recently the non-centrosymmetry compounds with general formula RTX3 and RTX2 (R=rare earths, T=transition metals and X=Si, Ge and Sb) have attracted considerable attention and we are investigating these compounds using neutron scattering and muon spin resonance (µSR) measurements. This project is in collaboration with ISIS, Warwick and ZHB research groups.

8. Thermoelectric materials

Thermoelectric materials provide a key solution to energy problems through the conversion of heat into electrical energy. The high thermoelectric figure of merit of some skutterudite compounds attracts current interest from the science community. One prerequisite for a high thermoelctric figure of merit is a low lattice thermal conductivity, i.e. a suppressed thermal transport by the phonons (called phonon glass) of the material. In filled skutterudites with chemical formula RT4X12with R = alkaline earth, rare earth, or actinide, T = Fe, Ru, or Os, X = P, As, or Sb) low energy vibrational excitations invoked by the cations R are supposed to be responsible for the suppression of heat transport.  We are currently investigating magnetism and lattice dynamics using inelastic neutron scattering. We are investigating many other families of caged-type compounds to understand the role of vibrational excitations on the thermoelectric figure of merit. For example R3T4Sn13 compounds in collaboration with Johannesburg's group.

 9. Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL)

New project has been started with Italian (Dr G. Mauro) and Argentinean (Prof. J. Sereni) groups to investigate SSL formation in Ce2Pd2In and Ce2P2Sn using neutron scattering and muon spin rotation measurements. We are working with Prof. Qimiao Si  (Rice University) to develop  theoretical  understand of the magnetic excitations in these materials..
