ChipIr

ChipIr is dedicated to the irradiation of electronic devices and systems using atmospheric-like neutrons to study the detrimental impact of single-event effects on modern technologies. Its design is optimised to mimic the atmospheric fast-neutron spectrum but with an intensity increased by a factor up to 109.

Technical information

Beamline

Energy range: 0-800 MeV matched to atmospheric spectrum.

Flux: 5.8 x 106 ncm-2sec above 10 MeV.

Filters: Cadmium filters are available to remove thermal neutrons from the incident beam. A steel and polyethylene filter can reduce the fast neutron flux by a factor of 10.

Modes: Collimated beam (down to 30 x 30 mm2) and ‘flood beam’ (up to 600 x 600 mm2).

Collimator: Fully variable collimation from 30 x 30 mm2 to 250 x 250 mm2. Multiple selection of beam sizes from 250 x 250 mm2 to 400 x 400 mm2.

DUT experimental area

Room: Large irradiation room (4.5 m x 3 m), flexible for variable DUT requirements. Camera and intercom link to data collection area and user room.

Sample positions: Two main sample positions.

Cabling: Two ‘patch panels’ for each position providing fixed multiple links to data collection areas (e.g. CAT5, serial, BNC, USB, lemo). HV safety SHV patch panel. User accessible cable runs to data collection area. Ethernet (to data collection room and internet).

Sample Position 1 (front position): Adjustable optical table breadboard to allow easy positioning of DUTs. Automated computer-controlled positioning available.

Sample Position 2 (back position): XYZ fully automated positioning table, max load 500kg (Z allows 1400mm movement; X and Y allow +/- 250mm movement). EU and UK Power sockets on table.

Power: Multiple EU, UK and 110V US supply.

Data collection area

Room: EMC shielded room with air conditioning.

Workstations: Three independent workstations with multiple provision of power, USB, ethernet etc.

Cabling: Two ‘patch panels’ for each position providing fixed multiple links to data collection areas (e.g. CAT5, serial, BNC, USB, lemo). HV safety SHV patch panel. Ethernet (to DUT experimental area, user room and internet).

Power: Multiple EU and UK power supply

Dosimetry and TOF information: Dosimetry data collection and provision of main ISIS timing signals and flux information.

User room

Independent user area for use during experiment. Provision of computers and ethernet. Comfortable seated area. Close proximity to refreshment areas.

Equipment:

Variety of power supplies, oscilloscopes, HV supplies, voltmeters available and additional needs on request. USB communication equipment. PC peripherals.
