User funding and opportunities
Select your country from the list below to view details of the funding provided by ISIS for your experimental visit to the facility.
User funding
UK
ISIS will cover reasonable travel and subsistence costs for any experimental user based at a UK institution. This includes:
- Economy travel to the ISIS Facility, and the return journey.
- Car hire
- Prior approval must be obtained from the ISIS User Office
- The ISIS User Office is unable to arrange hire car bookings on your behalf. Please either make the booking yourself and claim the cost back, or ask your university to arrange the hire. If your university makes the booking, ISIS will require a copy of the supplier’s paperwork in advance so that a Purchase Order (PO) can be raised for the correct amount. The PO number must then be referenced on the invoice submitted by your university for payment.
- Facility accommodation booked via the ISIS User Office.
- Food expenses during the experiment (will be provided via a swipe card).
Travel is to be booked by the user and claimed back after the experiment. Accommodation and food will be funded directly by ISIS.
ISIS will reimburse expenses for up to four UK users per experiment.
Claims are to be submitted on the appropriate expenses claim form and must be submitted within 60 days of completion of the experiment ending.
Italy
Funding may be available to Italian users for experimental proposals with an Italian PI, via CNR funding.
If you have successfully been awarded funding via this route, you may claim the following:
- Cost of accommodation
- £21 per day to cover the cost of meals
- Economy travel to and from the UK
- Public transport costs
- Hire car costs
Travel is to be booked by the user and claimed back after the experiment. Accommodation and food will be funded directly by ISIS.
Claims are to be submitted on the appropriate Expenses Claim Form and must not exceed:
- £750 per proposal for experiments awarded up to July 2024
- £850 per proposal for experiments awarded since July 2024
All claims must be submitted within 60 days of completion of the experiment ending.

User opportunities
NEPHEWS twinning programme
ISIS is part of the EU-funded NEPHEWS project. This provides the opportunity for European researchers to gain experience of neutron and muon experiments.
If you would like to come to ISIS to get experience of neutron or muon methods, you can find further details of this on the Twinning pages of the NEPHEWS website. To take part, please fill in the form on the NEPHEWS website (click the ‘Registration’ link on the left hand side of the page).
ISIS is able to cover reasonable travel and subsistence costs for Twinning visits to the facility under the NEPHEWS programme. This includes:
- Reasonable economy flight costs to the UK, and the return flight.
- Economy travel from the UK airport to the ISIS Facility, and the return journey.
- Facility accommodation which must be booked via the ISIS User Office through the visit request online system.
- Food expenses during the experiment (will be provided via a swipe card).
Please note: An individual user can only be funded under this scheme once. A user can only claim once for one experimental visit. Multiple experimental visits cannot be funded for the same user.
Any incurred expenses can be claimed via the form on the ISIS expenses webpage.
Contact Philip King if you would like further information on the NEPHEWS Twinning Programme.
ReMade@ARI
To meet the challenge of designing new materials for a circular economy, ISIS is one of more than 50 analytical research infrastructures in the European ARIE network whose potential will be harnessed through new project ReMade@ARI.
Proposals to access ISIS are submitted via a ReMade@ARI centralised portal.
All user travel and subsistence claims are to made directly to ReMade@ARI. Check out the project guidance for what user support is funded.
Contact Philip King if you would like further information on the ReMade@ARI project.
Bring an undergraduate - UK PIs only
ISIS will support UK users to bring an undergraduate to an ISIS experiment.
ISIS is keen to encourage the next generation of neutron and muon users. In order to provide undergraduates with the experience of helping with an experiment at a national research facility, ISIS will cover the travel and subsistence costs for undergraduates from UK institutions to attend experiments at the facility, in addition to the usual research team.
A recent publication, based on research done in the United States, shows that engaging undergraduate students in neutron scattering experiments through beamtime trips, student internships, or class visits is a powerful driver of scientific progress.
Contact the ISIS User Office if you would like to include an undergraduate as part of your experimental team.
ISIS partner country collaborators - UK PIs only
If you are a UK researcher with collaborators in ISIS partner countries, we may be able to support your collaborators coming to ISIS to participate in your experiment.
Currently, eligible partner countries are Brazil, Indonesia, and Malaysia.
