John is responsible for ISIS accelerator operations and the R&D which will support running optimally and sustainably for the lifetime of the facility. He is also Project Sponsor for the design of a potential MW-class neutron and muon facility at RAL – ‘ISIS-II’, and coordinates ISIS efforts towards the design of accelerators for Particle Physics and Proton Therapy.

After completing a PhD in atomic physics John did post-docs involving ion sources and radar before joining the ISIS Ion Source Section in 1997.
He is currently chair of the Band E – F promotion boards and STFC Relationship Manager for Imperial College London.

John is a member of the International Advisory Committee for the J-PARC/KEK laboratories in Japan, is part of the Accelerator Technical Advisory Committees for the US and Japanese spallation neutron sources, has participated in numerous ESS Annual and Schedule Reviews and was chair of the China Spallation Neutron Source Accelerator Advisory Committee. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.​
