Overview

Advanced physical and magnetic property measurements of materials can be performed easily with the Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System-3 and the Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System-9. These instruments can be outfitted with different attachments and sample loading components to allow for a range of different measurements. The other instruments housed in the Materials Characterisation Laboratory consist of a ferroelectric test rig and the NanoMOKE3; a magnetooptical magnetometer and Kerr microscope.

Instruments

Quantum Design Magnetic Property Measurement System-3

The MPMS 3 system integrates a SQUID detection system and a precision temperature control unit inside the bore of a high-field superconducting magnet. The SQUID magnetometer is the most sensitive device for measuring magnetic properties of materials. Common uses of this equipment include field sweeps and hysteresis loops, moment vs. field and moment vs. temperature measurements and field and zero-field cool measurements.

Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System-9

The PPMS-9 is an open architecture, variable temperature and field system designed to perform a variety of scripted and automated magnetic and physical property measurements.

Quantum Design Physical Property Measurement System-DynaCool

The PPMS-DynaCool is an open architecture, variable temperature and field system designed to perform a variety of scripted and automated magnetic and physical property measurements. As the next generation PPMS, this system runs without the use of liquid cryogens.

NanoMOKE3

The Durham Magneto Optics NanoMOKE3 is a high-performance magnetooptical magnetometer and Kerr microscope, capable of both laser magnetometry and video Kerr microscopy. The instrument will detect longitudinal, transverse, and polar magnetooptical Kerr effects and is largely suited to measuring the magnetic properties of thin magnetic films and magnetic nanostructures.
