Now that the old TS1 target assembly has been deconstructed and the radioactive components removed from the target services area (TSA), it is being prepared for the installation of the new assembly. To make the process of craning new equipment into the TSA quicker and safer, the shielded roof lintels have been removed and replaced with a lighter temporary roof.

This is the first time that some of the old lintels had been removed since their installation during the construction of TS1, with each one weighing over 20 tonnes. The temporary roof will let in a lot more light while still enabling the area to be at a slightly lower pressure than the rest of the target station. This means that there is a lower risk of any contaminated dust particles leaving the TSA.
